Internal & External Hydrant

A fire hydrant is an active fire protection system that acts as a connection point for firefighters to connect their fire hose to, in order to combat a fire. Water from the hydrant is then directed through the lay flat fire hose to a nozzle which is then directed to the seat of a fire.

Internal Fire Hydrant System :
Internal hydrants are required to protect parts of the building that cannot be protected by an external hydrant. They will only cover the level on which they are installed.

Services

They are provided for use by the fire brigade or other internally trained fire personnel. These Internal fire hydrants provide means of delivering considerable quantities of water to extinguish the fire or to prevent the spread of fire. These internal fire hydrant system effectiveness in stopping the fire is more pronounced if the premises are provided with an early warning device of any outbreak of fire.

External Fire Hydrant System :

External hydrants may have one or two fire hoses connected to them which gives a total maximum length of 30 metres. In general, external hydrants must be positioned to allow :

1. Pedestrian access to the building for the fire brigade

2. All parts of the building to be within reach of a 10 metre spray from the fire hose nozzle.

3. Good access and protection from vehicular damage.

Fire Sprinkler System
A sprinkler is a nozzle attached to a network of pipes, and installed just below the ceiling of room/warehouse. Every sprinkler has a small glass bulb with a liquid in it. This bulb normally blocks the flow of water. In a fire, the liquid in the bulb will become hot. It will then expand, and shatter the glass bulb, removing the obstacle and causing water to spray from the sprinkler. The main difference between a hydrant and a sprinkler is that a sprinkler will come on automatically in a fire. A fire hydrant has to be operated manually.
Fire Pump System

Firefighting pump/pumps with all fitments and components and pump control panel, housed in a pump house should be of adequate dimensions, there are four types of pumps that are used -

Fire pump : This is the main pump connected to the static fire tank and help in supplying water to the wet risers.

Stand by pump : This pump (mostly diesel operated) is used as an alternative to the main fire pump.

Terrace pump : This is connected to the Terrace Overhead tank

Jockey pump : This pump is to regulate the pressure in the hydrant lines, in case if there is a drop in pressure, this automatically starts and stops when required pressure is reached in pipelines

Services

Fire pumps are usually housed in a pump room very close to the fire tanks. The pumps should be located at a level just below the bottom of the fire tank, so that all the water in the tanks can flow into the pumps by gravity. There is a main pump that is electric driven for hydrant system, a backup pump that is electric driven for sprinkler system, and a second backup/standby pump that is diesel-powered, in case the electricity fails, which is common. Each of these pumps is capable of pumping the required amount of water individually - they are identical in capacity.

There is also a fourth type of pump called a jockey pump. This is a small pump attached to the system that continually switches on to maintain the correct pressure in the piping systems, which is normally 7 kg/sq.cm . If there is a small leakage somewhere in the system, the jockey pump will switch on to compensate for it.

Fire Alarm System

Purpose of fire detection and alarm system which is activated either by operating manually through MCP - manual call point or activated through automatic detective devices like sensors is to detect smoke, heat or fire as early as possible depending upon the situation and initiating an alarm and triggering other appropriate actions like

  • 1. Firefighters immediately responding to the situation.
  • 2. Automatic or Manual triggering of the extinguishing process.
  • 3. Evacuation of occupants.
Supply & Refilling of Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguisher is a mechanical device created for putting out fires. A fire extinguisher consists of a large aerosol can typically containing two substances : a solid, gas, or liquid substance, and a propellant. Propellants are pressurized chemicals that eject fire-fighting substances from their cylinders when the handle is pressed.

Four major extinguishers, and using the right extinguisher at the right time is as essential as understanding how extinguishers work. Addressing a fire with the wrong extinguisher may cause more harm than good.

Dry Powder Extinguishers : These extinguishers contain dry powder, using nitrogen as their propellants. In this use case, dry powders help absorb heat, then melt and coat the fuel, consequently cutting off the oxygen supply and containing the fire. Dry powder is typically a mixture of chemicals, including mono-ammonium phosphate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, etc.

Services

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers : CO2 extinguishers have gaseous and liquid carbon dioxide in their tanks, stored under high pressure to liquify it even further. When released, the gas expands, smothering oxygen and absorbing surrounding heat when it turns from a liquid into a gas (the latent heat of vaporization).

Water Extinguishers : These extinguishers are water-filled tanks using carbon dioxide or nitrogen as propellants. Water extinguishers are the most widely used type of extinguisher, helping eliminate heat from fire while cutting off the supply of oxygen.

Foam Extinguishers : These are foam-filled extinguisher tanks using nitrogen as their propellants. Foam extinguishers work by smothering the fire, absorbing its heat. When used, the foam spreads thinly over the fire, cutting oxygen supply and containing the heat. Its heat-absorbing property is aided the water the foams contains.

Refilling of fire extinguisher : Refilling your cylinder is an important apart of fire extinguisher maintenance, ensuring the device is always available to work when you need it most. However, understanding the importance of refilling is entirely different from knowing when a refill is needed. Here are several reasons to refill your extinguishers :

1. If the fire extinguisher is used, even partially, it is useless in case of a subsequent fire scenario. Hence it is essential to get the fire extinguisher recharged immediately, without any delay.

2. You must schedule routine refilling of extinguishers throughout their lifespan, regardless of if they have been used or unused. Such refilling typically takes place every three years from the manufacture date.

3. Damages, dents, and other environmental factors may result in depressurizations. Hence, you must examine and refill your extinguishers whenever any of these is detected.

Foam Fire Suppression System

Foam fire suppression system combines water and foaming agents for large scale fires or those difficult to extinguish. This kind of water-based fire sprinkler or nozzles is quite efficient in extinguishing certain types of fires. It extinguish a fire by cooling and separating fuel from oxygen. The systems are used to cool the fire and coat the fuel that the fire consumes to prevent contact with oxygen and reduce any combustion ability. The extinguishing agent blankets the surface of the fuel. The foam’s water content will then cool the fuel, and the area of foam that is covering the fuel will stop the combustion of flammable vapours. High expansion foams work by completely filling the volume of a building from floor to ceiling to suffocate and cool the fire.

Gaseous Fire Suppression System

A gas extinguishing system is a fire extinguishing system that extinguishes fire with the help of a gaseous extinguishing agent either through oxygen displacement (reduction of oxygen content) or physical effects (heat extraction). They are activated by a smoke or heat detection system that detects the early presence of smoke or heat. Most commonly found in server rooms, computer suites and communication rooms a Gas Suppression system is responsible for protecting the integral functions of your business.
There are few different gases that we use in these systems :

  • A. Novec 1230 (clean agent);
  • B. Inergen (Inert gas IG-541), a blend of nitrogen, argon and CO2;
  • C. Argonite (Inert gas IG-55), a blend of argon and nitrogen.
  • D. CO2
  • E. Aerosol

Public Address System

An electronic sound amplification and distribution system with a microphone (input transducer), amplifier and loudspeaker (output transducer), used to allow a person to address a large public.

The microphone picks up the sound and convert it to electronic signal in millivolts and this is fed to the amplifier for amplification. The amplifier has two sections; the Pre-Amp and the power –AM. The pre-amp does the first boosting of the input audio signal to a level handle able by the last stage of the amplifier called power amp. This early stage (pre-amp) is designed to give good voltage gain. The pre-amp is referred to as the voltage amplifier. The last amplifier stage is the power amp and is the stage that typically requires most attention; the power efficiency. After the amplifier stage, the very small input signal is then magnified to a larger version and is fed to the speaker for conversion to sound. The speaker is an electromagnetic device that operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction and with the help of its component converts electrical signal to sound.

Fire Ball

When the fire extinguisher balls encounter flame of fire either by being thrown into a fire or in a location where there is potential for fire to occur, it self-destructs and releases the content that is mainly a dry chemical powder. At that moment, the dry chemical powder forms a cloud around the area and prevents the fire from occurring.
